黑莓智能手机的市场份额也不断地被竞争对手苹果iPhone和谷歌Android系统手机蚕食。数据显示，苹果2011年最后3个月出售了3700万部iPhone，超过黑莓过去3个季度的出货量总和。在截至3月3日的财季内，RIM的黑莓手机出货量仅为1110万部。

2013年01月21日，日前，黑莓CEO海因斯在接受德国媒体Die Welt采访时透露，公司将在发布下一代手机操作系统BlackBerry 10后考虑出售旗下的硬件部门。海因斯指出，虽然公司没有必须仓促地做出这样的决定，但是为了能够让公司能够继续成功地运转下去，他们不得不考虑到所有的可能性。
